It’s just money…

Why is it that whenever I want to buy something, it’s usually the more expensive option in the group?  We’re looking at getting into the new century a few years too late… and buying a flat screen TV.  So the options are DLP, Plasma or LCD.  We want to hang it on the wall, so that eliminates DLP… the room it’s going in is pretty bright, so that eliminates Plasma.  OK, LCD it is… in which they are routinely $500 – $1,000 more than their equivalent in Plamsa or DLP.  Once we make that call it’s on to hdmi cables, calibration, wall brackets, HD service upgrade.  This is the one we’re looking at right now.

  1. I just heard about a study on this topic yesterday (how price influences perception of quality):

I think this captures exactly why this happens: we spend more because it helps us feel better about spending anything at all.
